Nigeria Formalises American Football Governance

The Nigerian National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially welcomed the pioneer board of the Nigeria Federation of American Football (NFAF), marking a significant step in formalising governance for one of Nigeria's fastest-growing emerging sports.

This new development now positions American football within Nigeria's formal sports ecosystem and aligns it with the Commission's RHINSE Agenda. In the most recently completed National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl LIX, six athletes of Nigerian descent featured, four of whom were on the winning team which shows Africa’s growing global sporting influence.

With formal federation status now secured, the opportunity expands across several areas: structured youth development pathways, sponsorship and commercial partnerships, talent identification aligned to global leagues, and institutional credibility for international affiliation.

The board is led by Babajide Akeredolu as President and supported by a 19-member executive spanning technical, administrative, and development roles.

American football may still be emerging domestically, but Nigeria's diaspora presence within the NFL ecosystem signals considerable long-term commercial potential — from grassroots academies to media rights, sponsorship activation, and a global talent export strategy.

Nigeria is not alone in this momentum; in late 2025, Ghana also officially incorporated the Ghanaian American Football Federation, reflecting a wider continental embrace of the sport.
