Amstel Lager has signed a partnership with AmaZulu FC, giving the Heineken Beverages brand a second top-flight club in South Africa and its first in KwaZulu-Natal.
The partnership was unveiled at The AmaZulu Experience at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban during the club’s media day for the 2026/27 season. Amstel’s logo will appear on the sleeve of AmaZulu’s home, away and alternative kits, according to Soccer Laduma. The rest of the partnership is built around matchday activity, fan initiatives and content on the club’s heritage, rolled out across the season.
Boipelo Malao, who leads Amstel’s mainstream beer category, said the partnership centres on AmaZulu’s supporters, with the brand aiming to “honour the pride of the Usuthu family” through what fans experience on matchday and beyond.
Founded in 1932, AmaZulu is one of South Africa’s oldest clubs and has been owned by Zungu Investments Company since 2020. Club president Sandile Zungu and his daughter, chief executive Sinenjabulo Zungu-Ntuli, are working to turn the club into a lifestyle brand ahead of its 2032 centenary. Primo became technical sponsor in 2025, and Mitsubishi Motors renewed its sponsorship in August with a seven-vehicle handover.
Zungu presented Amstel as a fit with those plans. “In Amstel, we have found a partner that respects that legacy and shares our ambition for the future,” he said, adding that the priority is value for supporters and stronger ties with the communities around the club.
Former AmaZulu midfielder Litha Ngxabi spoke about what the club means to its fans. “When you have worn the AmaZulu badge, you understand that it belongs to generations of people, not only to those on the pitch,” he said.
Amstel’s growing football portfolio
Amstel’s South African football strategy is built on clubs. The brand became Orlando Pirates’ official beer partner in August 2025 on a five-year deal. In January 2026 it extended that agreement to take naming rights to Orlando Stadium, now the Orlando Amstel Arena. AmaZulu takes the brand beyond Gauteng into the country’s second most populous province.
The same model runs outside Africa
n South America, Amstel renewed its sponsorship of Conmebol’s top club competitions in October, extending a relationship that has now run for more than a decade.
That approach contrasts with SAB, whose Carling Black Label brand is attached to the PSL’s Carling Knockout Cup. Heineken Beverages, formed in 2023 from the merger of Heineken South Africa, Distell and Namibia Breweries, is buying into individual fan bases rather than competitions. Club deals give it year-round matchday presence and a direct relationship with supporters in specific regions.
Scale of AmaZulu Deal
The scale of the AmaZulu deal is hard to judge without terms. The Pirates deal grew into stadium naming rights because Amstel aligned the club and the venue operator. That is an unusual structure in South African football, where clubs are typically tenants and venues keep naming and advertising rights. Moses Mabhida is a municipal stadium, so any move by Amstel beyond club-controlled inventory in Durban would need a similar three-way arrangement.
