The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Basketball Africa League (BAL) will evolve into a 12-team league with permanent franchises in the coming years, these teams will own their own arenas and have permanent homes.

Since 2021, the BAL has contributed more than USD 250M to Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), a number that is expected to grow to USD 5.4 billion by 2034 according to various reports.

The cost of a BAL franchise is expected to start at about USD 50M and potentially more depending on the market.

Key Areas of Focus:
- Arena Development: Franchise owners will be required to invest in state-of-the-art arenas, a core element of the league’s financial and operational structure.

- Revenue Growth: The shift to permanent franchises opens pathways for stronger revenue streams, including ticketing, merchandise, sponsorships, and media rights—mirroring major global sports leagues.

- Investment Momentum: The BAL continues to attract significant international investment while ensuring African stakeholders remain at the center of its long-term vision.

- Community Integration: Deep community engagement, driven by local programs and initiatives, will play a key role in each franchise’s sustainability and impact.
