Johannesburg's 1995 World Cup final venue names a new commercial partner after Emirates' exit, in a deal spanning rugby, football and precinct regeneration.
10bet has secured the naming rights to Ellis Park Stadium, rebranding one of world rugby's most recognisable venues as 10bet Ellis Park under a five-year agreement. The operator's most visible partnership yet on the value of South African sport as a commercial platform.
Th partnership fills a vacancy left when Emirates walked away last year, ending a naming-rights run that began in 2015 as the airline redirected spend toward the United States and basketball. For 10bet, the 62,500-capacity Johannesburg stadium is home to the United Rugby Championship's Lions, host of the 1995 Rugby World Cup final and a 2010 FIFA World Cup venue. It offers year-round inventory across rugby, football, entertainment and community events.
The stadium agreement stacks on top of 10bet's existing status as official partner of Bafana Bafana, giving the operator a portfolio that spans a national team and a marquee venue in the country's commercial capital. The partners said they will collaborate on matchday and fan-engagement initiatives and work with stakeholders on efforts to regenerate the surrounding inner-city precinct.
"This is more than a naming rights agreement; it is the start of an exciting journey," said Michelle Colborne, Marketing VP at 10bet Africa.
Pieter Burger, Managing Director at Ellis Park Stadium, framed the partnership as a fresh commercial chapter.
"Ellis Park has always been more than a stadium," he said, describing the deal as "a fresh and exciting chapter."
Former Springbok and Lions fly-half Butch James, now a 10bet brand ambassador, made his test debut at the ground. "It's fantastic to see 10bet committing to such a significant partnership," he said.
The financials weren't disclosed, but the strategic focus is plain. Naming rights are the most efficient way for a brand to convert a heritage venue's equity into everyday recognition - every fixture, broadcast graphic, ticket and travel direction now carries the 10bet name. Replacing an airline with a new backer shows a major trend: as global carriers and legacy sponsors retrench, operators chasing scale have become among the most aggressive buyers of stadium and club inventory worldwide.
In South Africa specifically, the deal deepens a pattern of a single brand underwriting the sport's commercial base. 10bet now sits behind both Bafana Bafana and the Lions' home. That reach is an asset for rights holders.
