Nigerian National Petroleum Company limited (NNPCL) partners With The Nigerian National Institute of Sports (NIS)

The Nigerian National Institute for Sports (NIS) and NNPC Limited - Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) have partnered to fuel the country’s sports renaissance through the Petroleum to People Development (P2PD) framework.

The initiative is to shift focus from natural resource extraction to long-term human capital development in other sectors such as sports.

What’s changing:

Infrastructure reset: New multipurpose arenas, sports science labs, athlete residences, and digital athlete-tracking systems.

Institutional upgrade: NIS repositioned as Africa’s hub for sports education, certifications, research, and continental competitions.

Zonal equity: Training centers across all six geopolitical zones to ensure talent access regardless of location.

Systemic development: A move from ad-hoc training to structured pipelines for athletes, coaches, and sports professionals.

The ambition is to extend beyond athlete development. Over the next ten years, P2PD aims to produce over 14,000 athletes and 2,600 internationally certified coaches.
