Silverbacks Holdings is in discussions with the National Basketball Association (NBA) regarding the acquisition of a franchise as the league continues to expand its African footprint, according to its Executive Chairman, Ibrahim Sagna.

Silverbacks already holds a significant minority stake in the Cape Town Tigers, a team that has competed for three seasons in the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

The NBA is currently targeting 12 franchise teams across Africa, signaling a long-term, franchise-led model for professional basketball on the continent and growing opportunities for institutional and strategic investors.

Silverbacks recently completed its 10th exit, driven by the acquisition of Mono by Flutterwave.

The firm also most recently secured fresh capital and strategic backing for its sports platform, led by actor-director Boris Kodjoe and South African producer Pepsi Pokane.
