What's happening in Nigerian football? A $7.5m sponsor, then a caretaker board

Nigerian football went from unveiling a $7.5 million sponsorship to running a caretaker administration inside three days. On Wednesday, NPFL signed EuroMatch as title sponsor and rebranded the league Euromatch NPFL. By Thursday, the federation president who'd stood at that announcement had resigned amid an alleged corruption probe, and the NPFL's own chairman was removed within hours. The new season kicked off on Friday anyway, under administrators nobody had heard of a week earlier, while the body meant to oversee the federation itself is still stuck in a leadership crisis of its own.

Wednesday, August 26:EuroMatch unveiled as NPFL's title sponsor in Abuja, a three-year, $7.5 million deal, with the league rebranded Euromatch NPFL from the 2026/27 season and 60 per cent of the sponsorship proceeds earmarked for clubs.

Thursday, August 27: NFF president Ibrahim Gusau and general secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi resign, part of eight of the federation's thirteen board members stepping down in total. The same day, the National Sports Commission directs any league chairman or chief executive not on NFF staff to vacate their post. NPFL chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye is removed as part of that directive, along with the chairmen of the Nigeria National League, Nigeria Women Football League and Nationwide League One, less than 24 hours before the new NPFL season is due to start.

Friday, August 28: The 2026/27 NPFL season kicks off as scheduled, under interim leadership. Dr Ayo Abdulrahaman is named NPFL Chief Operating Officer with immediate effect. Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, previously the NFF's deputy general secretary, is named interim general secretary, with Dr Ademola Olajire, previously the federation's director of media and communications, stepping up as interim deputy general secretary.

Presidential Directive:

The trigger behind all of it was a presidential directive. In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu ordered a ordered a "comprehensive reform of Nigerian football," arguing the changes must "respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football." He was direct about the underlying problem: "Football, Nigeria's most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system." Tinubu instructed the NSC chairman to work with the NFF secretariat and football stakeholders to keep administration running through the transition, including consultation with FIFA and CAF to protect Nigeria's standing within international football.

Federal Intervention Fund:

Underneath the reshuffle sits the same open question: the EFCC, ICPC and DSS are examining how the NFF used a ₦17 billion ($12.6M) federal intervention fund, approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 to clear unpaid wages and bonuses owed to the national teams. However, no findings or charges have been made public. On-field failures compounded the pressure, the Super Eagles missing the 2026 World Cup for a second straight cycle and the Super Falcons missing the 2027 Women's World Cup for the first time since 1991.

Where does this leave EuroMatch Deal?

This leaves the EuroMatch deal being administered, for now, by people who weren't in the room when it was signed. Abdulrahaman runs the NPFL day to day, Ikpeme and Olajire run the federation's secretariat, and none of the three were part of Wednesday's unveiling according to reports. Sponsorship contracts of this size typically bind the institution rather than the individuals who sign them, so the agreement itself should hold. What's less certain is whether a caretaker administration, installed explicitly temporary, has the standing to enforce commitments like Elegbeleye's 60 per cent club payout.
