Canal+ Group has confirmed an extension of its broadcast agreement with the National Soccer League (NSL), securing continued live rights to the Premier Soccer League across Sub-Saharan Africa via SuperSport on DStv.

The announcement came as Canal+ - which completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group last year, confirmed its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, using the occasion to shows its commitment to African sports content.

The renewed deal covers the PSL's full domestic portfolio: the Betway Premiership, the MTN8, the Carling Knockout, the Nedbank Cup, and the Motsepe Foundation Championship. In South Africa, SuperSport channels are supplied by Canal+ to broadcast licence holder MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, which delivers the DStv offering to subscribers.

A Partnership Built Over Decades

The PSL and Canal+ describe their relationship as one of the most enduring sports rights partnerships in Canal+'s global portfolio - a claim underscored by the tone of Tuesday's announcement, which leaned heavily on continuity and shared investment rather than commercial fanfare.

PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza framed the renewal in terms that went well beyond broadcast fees.

"Football institutions are built through consistency, responsible stewardship and strong relationships. Together, the PSL and SuperSport have worked to grow the game, strengthen our clubs and bring South African football to audiences across the continent. We are pleased that this partnership will continue, with CANAL+ sharing our commitment to the long-term growth and success of South African club football."

Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot echoed that sentiment, pointing to the competitiveness of the recently concluded Betway Premiership season - where the title was decided only on the final matchday - as evidence of the league's growing appeal.

"The extension of our partnership with the PSL is an important moment for CANAL+ following our acquisition of MultiChoice Group last year. It underscores our commitment to invest in compelling local sports and entertainment content across Africa."

Mignot also paid direct tribute to the league's long-standing leadership: "The growing strength of South African clubs is a testament to the vision and leadership that has helped shape the PSL over many years, including the significant contribution made by Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Kaizer Motaung, together with their able Executive Committee."

Stability, Development, and What Comes Next

Speaking at the announcement, Dr Khoza used the platform to address the broader significance of the deal for South African football's ecosystem - connecting the broadcast revenue directly to club sustainability and player development.

"The rights secured through this agreement will provide stability to our clubs, certainty to our supporters, opportunities for our players, and a foundation upon which the next generation of South African football can continue to grow."

He pointed specifically to the DStv Diski Challenge development platform as a product of sustained broadcast investment, noting that several Bafana Bafana players heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup came through that system.

His closing remarks carried the weight of a chairman who has spent decades building an institution: "The PSL is secure. Its future is protected and the best is still ahead."

The new partnership is also a statement for Canal+’s intent, about how it intends to operate in Africa following the MultiChoice acquisition and not as an extractor of rights, but, in Khoza's framing, as a custodian of the game.
