Nigeria's most ambitious sports infrastructure project is still a work in progress. Recent images show the current state of the arena.

The Lagos Arena, a 12,000-capacity indoor venue under construction in the Lekki area of Lagos State, was originally slated to open in December 2025. As of that same month, however, construction remained at the substructure level - still in the soil testing and piling stage. The revised completion date is now December 2027 according to multiple reports.

First conceived under the name "Project Arena," the $100 million development is being built in the Victoria Island neighbourhood and is designed to host both major sporting events and concerts. The arena's design was handled by Turkish architecture firm Yazan Design Architecture, with plans finalised as far back as 2020.

Ground officially broke on 24 February 2024.

Who's Footing the Bill?

The project is being financed through a public-private consortium led by Tayo Amusan's Perspectives Corporation, with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) holding a 40.5% stake. Additional private sector backers include Adino Capital Ltd., Sports Infrastructure and Entertainment Development Company Ltd., and Persianas Group.

When completed, the Lagos Arena will be the largest indoor arena in Nigeria - a significant milestone for a country that has long punched below its weight in sports infrastructure relative to its population and sporting appetite. A world-class venue in Lagos opens the door to bigger concerts, international sporting events, and the kind of live entertainment economy that cities like Cairo and Johannesburg have already begun to build.

The delay is a setback, but the project is moving. Africa's sports infrastructure story is still being written.
