LALIGA and Royal Bafokeng Nation Open Elite Youth Academy in South Africa

LALIGA and Royal Bafokeng Sports, representing the Royal Bafokeng Nation, have launched a youth football academy in South Africa, deepening international investment into player development pathways on the continent.
The Royal Bafokeng Sports LALIGA Academy will be based at the Sports Campus @ Marang in Phokeng, a high-performance facility that includes multiple natural and artificial pitches alongside a dedicated performance centre. The initiative combines LALIGA’s established youth development model with the Royal Bafokeng Nation’s long-term strategy to use sport as a lever for community and economic development.
The academy is set to accommodate around 100 players across age groups ranging from U14 to senior level, creating a structured pathway that integrates training, competition, and education. Players will compete across regional and elite competitions, supported by performance analytics and technical oversight from LALIGA’s coaching ecosystem.
The programme will be led by a UEFA Pro Licence Technical Director, working alongside local coaches under the supervision of LALIGA’s central technical team in Spain, reflecting a model designed to transfer knowledge while embedding local capacity.
“This launch reflects a shared commitment to the responsible and sustainable development of youth football in Africa,” said Trésor Penku, Managing Director of LALIGA Africa. “By combining our methodology with Royal Bafokeng Sports’ infrastructure and long-term vision, we are building a high-performance environment for talent development.”
The academy aligns with Royal Bafokeng Nation’s Vision 2035 strategy, which prioritises investment in sport as part of broader socio-economic development.

The project adds to LALIGA’s growing footprint across Africa and global markets, where the league has delivered more than 900 sports development projects across over 60 countries in the past decade.
The launch also reflects a broader shift toward structured, internationally backed academies across Africa, as global leagues and institutions seek to establish earlier access to emerging talent while contributing to local ecosystem development.
