The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigeria's Samson Adamu as Acting Secretary General, marking a leadership transition at the Cairo-based governing body and elevating one of its most senior tournament operators into a top administrative role.

Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to hold the position since CAF's founding more than 70 years ago, according to the Nigeria Football Federation. His appointment was proposed by CAF's Executive Committee and ratified by Congress during meetings held in Cairo on Sunday, 29th March 2026.

He succeeds Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down the same day, creating an immediate vacancy at a time when CAF is managing ongoing governance reforms and commercial expansion across its competitions.

Adamu previously served as CAF's Director of Tournaments and Events, overseeing the delivery of flagship competitions including the Africa Cup of Nations and club tournaments. His promotion reflects a preference for internal succession, with CAF turning to executives with operational experience and institutional knowledge to ensure continuity.

The move also increases Nigeria's representation within CAF's senior leadership ranks, an area where the country has historically had limited presence despite its influence across African football.

Adamu takes on the role as CAF continues to implement reforms aimed at improving governance, transparency and the commercial positioning of its competitions. His immediate focus is expected to centre on maintaining operational stability while supporting the next phase of the organisation's strategic agenda.
