Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, also serving as Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, met with NBA Africa CEO Claire Akamanzi to explore expanding and professionalising basketball in the country. The meeting, held in Uganda, also included NBA Africa's Regional Partnerships and Sponsorships Manager Nicholas Mutebi.

According to multiple reports, the discussions focused on NBA Africa's continental strategy to deepen its presence through partnerships with governments, private sector investors, and local sports institutions.

NBA Junior League Proposed

A key outcome was the proposal to establish an NBA Junior League in Uganda, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports. The league would introduce structured competition at the secondary school level, engaging thousands of young athletes while building a grassroots pipeline. Beyond competition, it would use sport to teach leadership, teamwork, and discipline.

Uganda's Basketball Landscape

Basketball has grown steadily in Uganda, with schools already running regular competitions and Ugandan clubs - including the City Oilers and Namuwongo Blazers - competing in the NBA/FIBA-backed Basketball Africa League (BAL).

Uganda is not alone. Across the continent, governments are increasingly partnering with global sports organizations to build structured sports economies. Rwanda, for example, has explored a partnership with Roc Nation Sports focused on athlete representation and commercial opportunities - a contrast to Uganda's grassroots-first approach.

NBA Africa has long emphasized basketball's economic potential, with leagues and tournaments generating activity across hospitality, media, infrastructure, and event management. For Uganda, a structured NBA Africa partnership could position the country as a growing hub for basketball talent and investment across the continent.
