Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Infrastructure On Track for October Opening

Infrastructure for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games is nearing completion, with organisers confirming that construction across all venues is approximately 95–96% complete ahead of the event's scheduled start later this year.
The Games, set to run from 31 October to 13 November 2026, will host around 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 from more than 200 countries, marking the first Olympic event ever staged on the African continent.
The delivery model is structured across three host locations. Dakar will serve as the primary showcase city, featuring key venues including the Iba Mar Diop complex and coastal fan zones along the Western Corniche. Diamniadio will operate as the logistical centre, anchored by the 50,000-seat Stade Abdoulaye Wade, Dakar Arena, and the athletes' village. Saly will host beach and water-based events through temporary infrastructure.
Organisers expect all construction to be completed by July, providing a three-month operational window ahead of the opening ceremony. The Youth Olympic Village, located at Amadou Mahtar MBOW University in Diamniadio, will be directly connected to Dakar via the Regional Express Train, supporting efficient athlete and delegation movement.
The competition programme will feature 35 disciplines and 151 events, with a balanced gender split and the inclusion of a refugee team composed of African refugee athletes.
Security and logistics planning is also at an advanced stage, with organisers indicating that comprehensive measures are in place to ensure a safe environment for athletes and visiting delegations.
The Olympic torch will be lit in Athens on 10 September before arriving in Senegal for a nationwide relay spanning all 14 regions.
Dakar 2026 represents a landmark moment for Africa's sports infrastructure ecosystem.
