Nigeria Pushes Abuja Motorsport District as F1 Ambitions Build
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has wrapped a two-day strategic engagement with an international consortium of business development promoters, investors, and technical partners, as plans firm up around a proposed Motorsport District in Abuja.
The development is being positioned as more than a racetrack. The vision integrates motorsport infrastructure with luxury retail, hospitality, tourism, entertainment, and cultural assets - a single mixed-use ecosystem designed to generate revenue well beyond race weekends. The concept sits alongside Nigeria's reported $500m push, backed by the NSC and Opus Race Promotions, to land a Formula 1 Grand Prix and end the sport's 30-year absence from the continent.
The project is being pitched as a vehicle to attract foreign direct investment, create jobs, deepen the tourism economy, and sharpen Abuja's competitiveness as a destination - leveraging Nigeria's scale as one of Africa's largest economies.
The initiative maps directly onto the NSC's RHINSE framework, which treats sport as a catalyst for economic development, job creation, infrastructure growth, and soft power. It also feeds the Commission's stated target of building a sports industry worth 5% of GDP, with $3–4bn in annual net revenue by 2027.
The NSC says it remains committed to engaging stakeholders and technical partners as talks advance toward projects capable of unlocking the economic potential of Nigerian sport.
